A vein that runs through much contemporary art practice involves interrogations of place. Artists who look at ideas as diverse as site-specificity, identity, the modern industrial landscape, and a wide range of social and political concerns are using place as a filter through which to explore their ideas. Human movement over the globe—whether the cultural tourism of well-heeled global citizens or the hope-driven relocation of hungry citizens of nowhere—has come to define our collective thought and activity, giving considerations of place a particular emphasis in the popular mind. Curator and studio faculty member Nestor Armando Gil has selected artists whose work can be tied to place from a variety of points of view.
