In the Line of Duty: Collecting African American Art, an exhibition highlighting a selection of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper from the William C. Robinson Family Collection, opensFriday, Oct. 16 and runs through Dec. 12 in the Williams Center Gallery at Lafayette College, 317 Hamilton St., Easton. It is free and open to the public.
An opening reception and talk will be held 5-8 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 15. At 7 p.m., join in conversation with curator William C. Robinson and essayist Curlee Raven Holton, Roth Professor of Art and founding director of Lafayette’s Experimental Printmaking Institute (EPI).
Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
The relationship between collector and artist, frequently founded in shared beliefs and passions connected to the creative enterprise, evolves as the patron witnesses first-hand the struggle the artist faces. This is often particularly true in the case of African American artists, who seek to assert their voices among the larger chorus of artists and within the art world in general.
An illustrated catalogue with introduction by William C. Robinson and essay by Curlee Raven Holton, the College’s Roth Professor of Art and founding director of EPI, will be available.
In the Line of Duty highlights selections from artists Charles Alston, Jules R. Arthur III, Edward M. Bannister, Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Moe Brooker, Grafton T. Brown, Selma H. Burke, Elizabeth Catlett, Claude Clark, Eldzier Cortor, Allan R. Crite, Louis Desarte, David C. Driskell, Robert Duncanson, Meta W. Fuller, Herbert Gentry, Earl Hooks, Humbert Howard, May Howard Jackson, Paul Keene, Norman Lewis, Richard Mayhew, Charles E. Porter, James A. Porter, Ellen Tiberino Powell, Augusta Savage, William E.
